The Freshman Lady Redhawks won their first match versus West Bloomfield at home 39-11 and followed it with a 34-8 win on the road. Coach Ken Gleason praised the improved guard play of the team which was complemented by strong scoring and rebounding out of the team’s bigs. “Well, we got 8 points each out of Arianna and Charlotte – this is the third consecutive game Charlotte’s had 8 points – and they probably have about that many rebounds each as well. I thought everyone went after the ball today. No one wants to be accused of letting someone else do her work. We’re still a little rusty from the lay off though. If we can put in a few good practices, we’ll get a lot more shots to fall.” Guard Sophia Alexander, who led the team with 9 points, singled out the good game of Carmen Cavataio (2 points). “She was looking up the floor a lot, and if some shots had gone in, she would have had a lot of assists.” Sarah Kesto was another post player who praised the effort of the team both in getting up and down the floor and on defense. “I think when we’re in the right mindset, we hustle pretty well, and I thought this game we did hustle really well. It’s something I am going to keep doing because the ball can come to you at any time, and it did come to me sometimes, it was just a little (laughs), uh, out of my reach. I think we’re getting an identity of being a great pressuring team, which I think we’re all pretty good at.” Charlotte (Riffe) agreed. “The game was a little sloppy at times [but] we’re definitely forming a team identity… we have a lot of spirit and passion for the game, and you can really tell, both on the bench and on the court.” Added Sophia, “We’re all close with each other.” Bree Rota and Emily Cousino each had a bucket in the game. Irsa Fjolla had a bucket and a free throw.
