In a non-league affair tonight at Athens gymnasium, the Lady Redhawks welcomed in the visiting Maples of Birmingham Seaholm. The game started out slowly as both teams couldn't find the bottom of the basket until 2 minutes in. But after those 1st-2 minutes, our ladies took control and jumped out to a 9-0 lead until Seaholm hits a triple in the last minute to cut the score to 9-3 to end the 1st quarter. Katie Malone led the Lady Redhawks with 5 points in the quarter. The second quarter started out with both teams trading points until our ladies went on a 12-3 run to take a 24-10 lead into halftime. Gabby Bieniek with 6 points and Katie Malone with 4 points led our ladies in the 2nd. The second half started out pretty much like the 2nd quarter ended with the Lady Redhawks jumping on the Maples with a 7-0 run to take a 21-point lead. The Maples came back a bit with a run of their own in the quarter to cut the lead down to 16, 34-18, but never got any closer. Both teams traded buckets throughout the 4th only to see the Lady Redhawks run away with the 43-26 win. The Redhawks defense and press were the keys to this victory as they held the Maples to 15% shooting, outrebounded them by 10 and had 21 steals. Senior guard Kata Tasich who had to watch the game from the bench because of an injury said, "our energy was strong off the bat tonight, we defended and stopped the ball well on defense. A total team effort." The Lady Redhawks were led by Freshman guard Gabby Bieniek (14 points & 6 rebounds) and Senior Guard Katie Malone (11 points, 3 assists & 3 steals). Other key contributors were, Annalise Lorenz (4 points & 6 rebounds), Kaitlyn Piggott (4 points & 4 rebounds), Jaya Jackson (3 points, 5 rebounds & 3 steals), Annabelle Beaubien (6 steals, 4 rebounds & 2 assists) and Laityn Dennis (6 boards & 2 steals). The win raised the Redhawks record to 3-1 on the season. Great game ladies!
