Freshman Lady Redhawks ride hot 1st quarter in win over West Bloomfield

West Bloomfield's JV B team came to Athens a little tired after a 45-minute bus ride, and the Lady Redhawks took advantage of the situation by playing what Coach Gleason called "about the best first quarter of any team I have ever been associated with." Sophia Alexander, Bree Rota, and Emily Cousino each had a three-pointer en route to establishing a 16 - 4 first quarter lead, and the Lady Redhawks withstood some strong on-the-ball defense by West Bloomfield to come away with a 39 to 11 win. When asked what made the difference in the win, Arianna Saracevic said, "I think our shooting... that helped a lot, especially when we were able to rebound and get it out and get a shot up." Teammate Vivian Luo agreed, "We talk, we're good at shooting, and helping each other out, both on offense and defense. (The best part is) we're all friends." The freshman team is still fighting the injury and sickness bug with four players unable to play. Mallory Colussi talked about how the team responded to the challenge. "I feel like it just kind of pushed us to work harder... we all had our own part in the game, and that was nice." One bit of good news the Redhawks did receive was the return of Dita Thaqi who played in her first game after recovering from a slightly torn meniscus that kept her sidelined for two months. Coach Gleason explained how much having Dita back helped. "I know I say this a lot, but I am continually being surprised at how competitive and responsible the players are. I was worried about just easing Dita back into playing, but she was all over the place. She really set the tone for our energy and defense. Plus, she's smart. She keeps her head and tries to follow up on any opportunities that present themself. Our roster is really looking solid." Sophia Alexander led the team with 13 points, Brielle Rota had 8, Dita Thaqi had 6, Emily Cousino had 5, Arianna Saracevic had 3, and Mallory Colussi and Charlotte Riffe had 2 each.
