Our Freshman Lady Redhawks traveled on Friday to face the Falcons of Rochester High School. The opening quarter was low scoring, but the Redhawks came out ahead by the score of 6-4, led by Brielle Rota with 4 points. The Lady Redhawks picked up the pace in the 2nd quarter and outscored the Falcons 9-4 to take a 15-8 lead into halftime with Carmen Cavataio pacing the ladies with 7 points. Both teams came out of the locker room and scored 7 points apiece in the 3rd, but the Redhawks still held the lead going into the 4th by the score of 22-15. That's when the team went cold and the Falcons came back by outscoring the Redhawks 11-2 to pull out a 26-24 win. Carmen Cavataio led the ladies with 9 points, Brielle had 6 points, Sophia Alexander 5 points and Emily Cousino added 4 points. The loss evens the Redhawks record at 1-1 in the early season. Coach Gleason commented on the game afterward, particularly the fact that a snow day had caused Charlotte Riffe and Arianna Saracevic (two of the team's favorite bigs) to have to reschedule a driver's ed class and miss the game. "It's part of being in 9th grade - all the other things that happen that age. I can't believe how busy these girls' lives are. I thought Carmen (Cavataio) gave us a chance. She's always good on both sides of the court, but she made good adjustments to her game to suit the circumstance. Gia (Leong) also did a great job with her first start. It was a lot to ask." He also explained the 4th quarter. " A 7-point lead at the 9th grade level is usually pretty safe. I met Geoff (Robinson, the Rochester 9th grade coach) at the pre-season scrimmage Rochester hosted. He's a good coach. I thought we had a better roster, but he did a better job getting his shooters open and getting the most out of his players. It's just one of those basketball lessons that you don't like, but you're probably better for. I might try to make a deal with them that comebacks like that are okay, but only on your home court. I wouldn't want something like that to happen at Athens."
