In the final game of the evening, our Varsity Lady Redhawk's welcomed in the Bears from Berkley from the White Division of the OAA. With 6 new players added to the team this year, Coach Klumpp and Varsity Assistant Coach Brittney Brennan didn't know what to expect. Two new Juniors, 2 new Sophomores and for the first time in over 10 years, 2 new Freshmen all to the varsity team. The future looks bright, but what about the present. With returning Captains and starters Katie Malone and Kata Tasich, both senior guards, the team was in good hands. Kata opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, a steal and a bucket for a quick 5-0 lead. Both teams continued to go back and forth with little scoring, but good defense and with 2 minutes left in the quarter, the Redhawks lead was 8-3 when Ashasri Daram hits a floater to put the Lady Redhawks up 10-3. Berkley scores at the end to cut the lead to 10-5 after 1 quarter. The second quarter was all defense by both teams, but the Bears cut the lead to 10-7 until the Lady Redhawks finished off the quarter with a 5-4 run to take a lead at halftime by the score of 15-11 against the taller Bear's team. Kata led the Lady Redhawks with 9 first half points. Both teams picked up the scoring in the 3rd quarter with the the Redhawks outscoring the Bears 18-12 to take a 34-23 lead heading into the 4th quarter. Freshman Gabby Bieniek was the driving force in the quarter leading the ladies with 10 points, while both Kata Tasich and Freshman Hailey Fellin both hit 3-pointers to extend their lead. The Bears started the 4th quarter quickly, cutting the lead to 6, but Senior guard Katie Malone scores on a backdoor and a driving layup to go up by 10. The Lady Redhawks closed out Berkley at the free throw line at the end to win the game by the score of 44-33. The ladies were led by Kata Tasich (14 points, 4 steals & 3 rebounds) & Gabby Bieniek (12 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals & 3 assists), wow, what a great first varsity game! Ashasri Daram contibuted (5 points, 3 steals & 2 assists while Annabelle Beaubien led the team with 6 rebounds and great defense on the Berkley bigs. Great way to start the season ladies and keep working hard!
